Dog Sledding & Other Winter Sports
I just added this page and will add photos and more to it as I can. Our son has been working all winter on training the 2 malamutes so it should be fun to see what happens this winter. I need to get some pictures of the dogs pulling him on the mountain bike for training. It's nice to live so close to the wilderness area so that all he has to do is go out the back door and head out with the dogs and the bike or sled.

Now to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate by the fire... Ahhhhhh.......
Skijoring
There's nothing like having your malamute run like the wind while you're hanging on for dear life on a pair of cross-country skis. Here, they are just starting out toward the trail.
Skijoring is having your dog pull you on a pair of skis. There is special equipment made for the purpose, which, by the way, includes a panic release, just in case your dog tries to wrap you around a tree!

These guys love to work!
Here, the dogs are pulling a 5 inch log that is 20 feet long to use in the dog run son is building for them.

I don't get kickbacks from the folks at this site but we get our dog supplies here. They are very helpful and really know their business! Really nice folks and reasonable prices, too!

May 2008 Look at this face! LOL... He has character, that's for sure! He's the latest addition to our family. He's our sled dog in the making. We have enough winter around here to keep this guy busy! But he has to grow a bit bigger first ;)
December 2008 Update: This beautiful guy is now 10 months old, 66lbs, and loves to go skijoring and bike-joring. The new sled hasn't arrived yet but as soon as it does we're sure he will love to head out to the hills with son and sled. He's very friendly, energetic... and even has good manners and gets along with our other animals. He's turning out to be a great companion for our son!
August 2009 Update: This guy is now 18 months old and loves to pull the sled. He had some practice last winter but now is big enough to go on longer treks. At 18 months, he could still grow some more. He and the pup in the photos below are eager to pull just about anything they're harnessed to! They pull the mountain bike, garden wagon, cross-country skis. Yet both of them can walk on a leash when necessary. They don't like it very much, though...lol
Son built a dog run this summer with the help of the dogs. He had them in harness as a team, pulling the small logs to be used for fence posts up the hill. This is part of their training and preparation to work as a team this winter when they head out on the trail. They need to be familiar with the harnesses, lines, leads, commands or they'd all end up in a tangled mess wrapped around a tree!

The new puppy...We just got this guy (January 2009) at 13 weeks and he thinks he's ready for takeoff! He's smiley, happy, well adjusted guy who's fun to be around. The sled came in and there's no holding him back! What a lot of excitement around here with a new puppy and the new sled! I will be adding more photos of the dogs and sledding here A little bigger. A little older.
Sept 2009: This boy has grown a lot and is looking structurally sound for pulling the sled this winter. He enjoys a good run. You can really tell that these dogs were made for running through the snow with a sled in tow. They are powerful, intelligent, and good at what they do.
